My name is Nolan Hutchings. I am from Madera in the fertile central valley of California. The two things that most people know about me are that I love Cheez-its (I got 15 boxes for my birthday one year, ate them in two and a half weeks) and Ultimate Frisbee. Noly Poly, Cheez-it and Swaggy P are some nicknames I’ve had. I’ve been playing sports since I was a kid and played soccer till middle school when I started running cross country.
I first started playing ultimate five years ago during my freshman year at BYU. With my cross country background and height, I realized that this sport was right up my alley and my love for this sport really took off when my roommates fall semester freshman year invited me to be on their intramural frisbee team “the Dominionaters” (it was supposed to be the Dominaters, but one of them spelled it wrong). After that semester I took off to serve an LDS mission in Vladivostok, Russia. I was able to play some ultimate a few times while I was over there and tried to keep up my frisbee skills as best I could so that when I got back I was able to improve more.
I learned about BYU CHI Ultimate my first semester back while playing ultimate in the rain with some of my friends when some of their players came up and invited us to practice. I had not been able to make it work with my schedule in the past and I'm excited for this to be my first real year with BYU CHI. I decided to make it a priority this year and that has been the best decision I’ve made this semester. Organized Frisbee, like BYU CHI Ultimate, takes the game to a whole new level. Playing with the team has opened my eyes to new strategies and new areas that I can improve on. It is helping me really fine tune many skills.
What I love the most about BYU CHI is the comradery. This group of guys is some of the best that you’ll come across. They are all welcoming and supportive while at the same time fiercely competitive. I am excited to be a part of the team at practices this year and learn from these amazing athletes. I know I’ll improve, because I am playing with the best.
