Ever since I was a little kid, my family and I would go to the park and my brothers and I would throw a frisbee. I always liked playing, and as time went on I found that it was something that I was pretty good at. I played ultimate occasionally with friends but didn’t know of any competitive teams or organizations. When I started college at BYU, I couldn’t wait to get involved with intramurals. I played ultimate and loved being able to compete in a somewhat organized way. One night after an intramural game, we were approached by a guy who said he played with the BYU team. He invited us to come out and play with the team, but I was busy with school that year and was never able to make it work.
Playing with CHI this year, has been an awesome experience, mainly because I love ultimate and everyone I've met has quickly become a friend. The guys on the team are genuinely good and fun-loving, and always willing to explain things when I don’t understand. I started with CHI not knowing anything about the different throws and different offensive or defensive systems, but with everyone's help I have been able to pick everything up quickly. Being new to competitive ultimate has been frustrating at times, but I can’t stay away. There have been many times when school is busy and I've been stressed about going to practice, but every time I come I remember why I love ultimate and why I love CHI. I love the intensity and the brotherhood that comes with the organization. I love learning how to play and I love pushing myself. Intramurals are great, but they don’t even come close to CHI. Playing here has taught me how to push myself to a level that intramurals would never have given me.
I am excited to compete, learn, improve, and contribute to BYU CHI Ultimate this season. I’m excited to be a part of the BYU CHI brotherhood. I’m excited to help represent everything that CHI stands for and to help build this program.
Most people probably don’t know that CHI stands for Competition, Humility, and Integrity. Everyone that plays and practices on this team exemplifies those characteristics. We work hard, we play hard and we love ultimate. Don’t be afraid to come and try it out, even if you come alone. You will soon make friends and learn what to do. You won’t regret it! Come be a part of BYU CHI Ultimate.
